Fun Family Chess (A REVIEW)

Chess is something I never learned to play as a kid. It always seemed like such a fancy, way above my head type of game. It turns out it isn't above my head, and just about anyone can learn to play, even kids! With Fun Family Chess even kids can quickly pick up the great game of chess. And, it really does make it fun. We all had a blast playing together.

Brain Blox did a great job with the presentation of this game, the box, the game board, the pieces, and the rules, it's all done really well. We received the physical game in a nice sturdy box that has a fun picture of some chess pieces and a nice colorful title that says Fun Family Chess. Of course, my son couldn't resist and wanted to start playing right away.

Unboxing the game itself was fun. He was excited to see what this particular chess game looked like. We have several chess games around our house, but none of them are like this one! Chess? Fun?! We just had to see.

As we took the game out Alex was surprised to see how neat it was that it folded up and had the pieces inside. Apparently, this was a big deal.

He found the pieces in nice little cloth bags inside. He was already impressed.

We found some other necessary items like rules, a dice, and an information card. He was excited to start playing.

A quick read through the instructions, and we were on our way! There are a few ways to play this game, but basically, we could use the dice to tell us which way to move, and we could use the reference card to remember which directions to move. There were some other hints and ideas in the rules that really made some light bulbs go on in our brains as far as strategy goes, so I guess it's more than a "rule" book, it's a chess strategy book!

We played several games, and they still wanted to keep playing even when it was time to clean up. They have never requested to keep playing our standard chess games, and in fact, have stopped playing chess because it just seemed that chess was just too hard, and kind of boring. Fun Family Chess is different. The tools it uses really keep the players from getting confused and helps them to see where strategy is important for certain plays.

Overall, I think this is a really well-made chess set. It's all wooden, and the pieces are smooth with many details. I highly recommend this if you want your kids, or even yourself to get chess down in a snap. It's also just fun to play. Additionally, there are videos on the Brain Blox website to watch about how to play if that's more your speed. Don't let chess intimidate you anymore! Try this one out, and I promise it'll be like a light bulb comes on in your head. Seriously.
