Progeny Press (A REVIEW)

I love study guides. Especially ones that go along with great literature. We had the opportunity to try out some study guides from Progeny Press. We had several titles to choose from, but the two I chose were Shadow Spinner Study Guide and Little House on the Prairie Study Guide. Both of these titles are geared toward the middle school ages, or around grades 5-8.

These study guides are available in a workbook, CD, or E-guide format. For this review, we received them as an E-guide, and I was able to immediately download them. After downloading them, I could print them up or use the interactive PDF to fill them in directly on the computer. I chose to give the interactive PDF a try, and we saved all the work to the computer. It was great to not have to print one up for each of my middle schoolers! They like doing things on the computer anyway.

Shadow Spinner Study Guide:

The Book, Shadow Spinner, by Susan Fletcher was a new title for me. I was very intrigued and excited to learn about this book through the study guide when I learned a little more about the book. It is a story that takes place in Ancient Persia, and it's about a woman who has to keep the Sultan happy through telling stories every night, or she might face certain death by morning. It was difficult to come up with stories that kept the Sultan interested, but she did it with the help of a young crippled girl. This is a great story, and the study guide really helped us to dig deeper. It's packed with vocabulary, comprehension questions, digging deeper questions, and optional activities.

Little House on the Prairie Study Guide:

The book, Little House on the Prairie, by Laura Ingalls Wilder was a familiar title for our family, but I love coming back to this book again and again. This is a book about a young girl and her adventures with her family traveling to a new home in Kansas. They travel in a wagon, and when they arrive pa builds a new house on the prairie. Laura shares all about their new home, and their life on the prairie.

The study guide for Little House on the Prairie is much the same as Shadow Spinner. It has vocabulary, questions, digging deeper, and some optional activities for each chapter. There are also essay prompts/questions, after reading activities, and a list of other books that relate to the topic of Little House on the Prairie.

These guides are wonderful and so easy to use and packed full of information and enrichment activities to help the student fully understand the book(s) they are reading. I like to use study guides to read aloud to all my boys and challenge them to think more about the story they are hearing. Check these ones out! There are some other great titles too.  If you'd like to see some of those other titles you can click on the banner below.
