Welcome to the next letter in our ABC blogging series, the letter R! When my boys were younger I'd ask them what they wanted to make or do each day, and 90% of the time they would reply make a racecar! Or, let's play with hot wheels tracks! My boys love cars. All of them. Even the big one (Dad). So, it's probably no surprise that we are doing R is for Racecar. My co-host Chareen is talking about Read-A-Loud in Your Homeschool.
LEGO has quite the collection of Speed Champions. Every year for Dad's birthday or Father's Day I try to take the kids to the store to pick something out, and Alex always wants to get him race cars. Sometimes just Hotwheels, but lately it has been these nice LEGO sets for him and his Dad to build together. He has quite the collection now!
First up we have the Jaguar Racing Car:
This is his most recent gift (I think for his birthday last March).
Next up is one of two McLarens:
It looks like the McLaren is a retired set. This one is from a while ago.
We also have the McLaren Mobil 1 racer:
Here we have the Audi Sport Quattro:
And the last 2 of the Dad sets, the Ferrari and the Porsche 911:
Time for the races!
The challenge I gave the boys this week was to build a racecar of their own. Here are the finished racecars we built. Some from instructions, some not.
From left to right: Aric's race car, a "cars" race car from instructions, mom's racecar from instructions, moms racecar not from instructions (he can't see because the car needed more weight, lol). |
I built this one from a video I found on YouTube. I also built one that didn't have directions but didn't get a picture of it.
Here is the video if you want to build it. I was able to use regular bricks from our bins. Super easy!
This is one we had in our character bin, already built from instructions from a while ago.
Aric's race car. Simple and fast! His own creation.
We set up our blue track that has 2 lanes. It could only fit the smaller cars in the lanes. Aric's had to race down in the middle taking up both the lanes, so it couldn't race against other cars. It did go fast though!
I would have loved to have a pinewood derby-type track to use, but this is what was available to us right now, so we made it work. This would be a fun activity with more cars and more kids too.
Mark, get set, go!
That's all for our LEGO fun this week! Thank you for reading and joining us!

ReplyDeleteThanks Annette! I didn't realize how many we had until I started taking pictures of them.
DeleteThe race car kits look like they were quite fun. What a neat collection to build together.
