Failure Free Reading (A REVIEW)

Disclosure: I received this product free through the Homeschool Review Crew

Does your child struggle with phonics based reading curriculum? All of my boys have struggled with phonics and the sounds of letters. I think having other ways to learn to read is so important because everyone learns so differently. I will admit that I didn't really even understand phonics completely until I was studying in college and I was doing a volunteer reading program at the local elementary school working with kids who are behind in reading. As I worked with these kiddos using phonics it suddenly clicked in my brain. I was an adult. Maybe that's why I haven't always been the fastest reader. I would have thrived, as a kid, on a program like Failure Free Reading Home Edition. It's NOT phonics based, and helps learners build their vocabulary very quickly.

I received 6 months access to Failure Free Reading Home Edition, an online program. I was able to even use it myself as an adult. It's a program that is especially useful for anyone struggling with reading, children who are beginning readers all the way through adults who are behind or English second language speakers. It's good for children or adults who are struggling with comprehension, special needs, low vocabulary, and any other reading difficulty that needs intervention. I don't struggle with reading in general, but like I said I am a very slow reader and I'd love to be better. This program was awesome for me to learn some harder vocabulary that I really haven't taken the time to learn. I will share some examples later in the review.

The login page for access to lessons.

To use this program the student needs access to any computer or device. There is a parent/teacher login, and each student has their own login created by the parent or teacher. When the student logs in for the first time there is an assessment to see where their reading level is at. My assessment placed me pretty accurately. I was learning mostly about words that I'd heard of, but never really knew the exact definition or usage, and there were even a few that I'd never even heard of at all. It was enlightening and very useful even for me.

A short video clip to start the lesson introduces the reading section.

After the assessment, the lessons run pretty smoothly. They are presented in order, and there is no skipping ahead. There are small simple steps that lead up to the student being able to read the whole sentence and ultimately the whole paragraph or book. But, more than just being able to read it, the student will also comprehend it! The comprehension comes from the reading repitition, the spelling of the words, the definitions being said over and over again, and the sentence building that is reinforced throughout.

What's available in the parent/teacher side of things. This is where you add your students and create their logins. This is where you can keep track of all your students and check their reports. There are also downloadable educational materials for guided reading lessons, and instruction outside of the online portion. It's a good place to get a clear picture of what's going on with each student and what they are working on.

The inside of the reader/book. It reads and flips pages exactly like a book.

What did I think of this program? I was really impressed by the instruction and challenge of the lessons. I think it's a great option for another way to learn to read. I enjoyed learning new big words that I didn't know. I think children who really need extra help could benefit from this program. Would I recommend it? Yes, I would. I would add that it's does not have a high tech feel, so it might seem "boring" in nature, and is not flashy or loud, but it's got some great content.
